We take great pride in our carefully tended gardens here at Lords of the Manor, and as such our experienced gardeners have a wealth of knowledge to share when it comes to ensuring your garden looks fantastic year-round. Read on to find out how the gardening team at out Cotswolds hotel will be tending their precious blooms this Spring…

Plant Your Seasonal Bedding Plants

April is the ideal time to get your Summer bedding locked into place. So, get to planting those primulas, polyanthus, marigolds, lobelia and petunias. Now is also a great time to sew wild flower seeds and grasses in time for summer.

Get to Work with Deadheading

Make sure you don’t neglect your perennial bedding and bulbs, deadhead your daffs, and keep your hydrangea pruned back to maximise growth potential. Any other perennials like delphiniums, lavender and lupins will all benefit from a healthy pruning as well.

Keep an Eye on Your Roses

April is a crucial time for your roses, so make sure you are paying close attention to them. Roses are particularly susceptible to disease, so spraying the leaves with fungicide to help prevent mildew, rust and blackspot is definitely a good idea. Another task for April will be to check your roses for aphids and brush off any small infestations before they become unmanageable.

Protect from Slugs and Snails

Suring the month of April, lots of your Summer plants will be starting to sprout, so it’s key that you keep these fragile shoots protected. Hostas, delphiniums and lupins are all magnets for slugs and snails, so make sure you get some pellets down to protect them. If you’ve got furry friends that frequent your garden, then there are plenty of pet friendly repellents out there- you just need to do your research.

Spruce Up Your Pond

If you have a pond in your garden, then April is the time to get your aquatic blooms in. Waterlilies and irises both make stunning summer additions to a garden pond.

Sow Some Summer Stunners

Now is your chance to get some real Summer colour bedded in for the warmer months. Sunflowers, pineapple lilies and sweet peas can all be planted in April. With your sweet peas, you want to get them sown at the base of a god support to provide a frame up which they can grow. You can get all manner of ornamental obelisks from your local garden centre, or a simple bamboo pyramid will do just as nicely.

So, those are the top tips on what needs doing in the month of April from the team here at our Cotswolds hotel.
