Here I am again at work after a trip in the Languedoc-Roussillon wine region of France. A dozen people gathered around the table for a tasting which lasted almost an hour instead of the usual thirty minutes. Second time that I decide to put my tasting sheet to the test and by spending more time with my fellow listeners in explaining how the sheet works I noticed more similitarities in the scoring than for our first trial.

This was a little bit of a fun experiment even if I usually don't enjoy being filmed. A customer had previously ordered his wines in order for me to prepare them as well as I should. We can also see a Vosne-Romanée 1996 from Jadot which I will not open before the guests are ready to drink it.

The tasting sheet and the three Italians

Having been working on a "Rating and Tasting" sheet during the week, the idea of trying it with the guests tonight naturally came to my mind and the usual relaxed tasting became close to a Masterclass... I have written a lot of tasting notes during the last three years but was never sure about giving ratings in number at the end. I am now starting to think that the tasting notes are giving an incomplete evaluation of the wines and want to start rating them as well. To do that, I wanted a system that will be available to see and understood by all the readers because I simply don't want them to think that a 99 out of a 100 has too much to do with the direction of the wind for example! We tried the sheet all together and I believe that they all enjoyed filling their ratings on two of the three wines.

Three fascinating white

A wine from the Loire Valley in France opened the tasting. The Cheverny from Domaine des Marniéres 2008 is a blend of 85% Sauvignon Blanc and 15% Chardonnay and this is the most affordable Sauvignon wine from this region on the wine list. A fresh cool breeze pleased my nose straight away with some Acacia, then some fruity characteristics appear in the name of peach and gooseberry. A butter element was present while bringing the nose very deep into the glass. The palate show a good concentration balanced by a crisp acidity, the acidity brings up flavours of green fruit like lime and granny smith but also a grapefruit element, the finish is long. A good food match would be with the goat cheeses from our trolley.
