In the early nineteenth century Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford is said to have complained of "having that sinking feeling" during the late afternoon. At the time it was usual for people to take only two main meals a day, breakfast, and dinner at around 8 o'clock in the evening. The solution for the Duchess was a pot a tea and a light snack, taken privately in her boudoir during the afternoon.
Later, friends were invited to join her in her rooms at Woburn Abbey and this summer practice proved so popular that the Duchess continued it when she returned to London, sending cards to her friends asking them to join her for "tea and a walking the fields." Other social hostesses quickly picked up on the idea and the practice became respectable enough to move it into the drawing room.

Once again, Lords of the Manor are offering you the opportunity to sample the delights of two award winning Michelin starred chefs. Matt Weedon, the Lords Executive Chef, will be joined by Alan Murchison, the Chef Patron of L’Ortolan, the Michelin starred restaurant just outside of Reading.
Matt Weedon joined Lords of the Manor just over a year ago from Glenap Castle where he gained his first star and in January this year he was awarded a star at Lords of the Manor.
Alan Murchison has worked in Michelin starred restaurants for over 16 years; he has been Chef Patron at L’Ortolan since 2001 and Managing Director of Alan Murchison Restaurants Ltd for four years. In April 2007 Alan bought the highly acclaimed Hibiscus restaurant in Ludlow and after a comprehensive refurbishment re-opened as La Becasse in July 2007.

Matt will be using the very best seasonal ingredients sourced from his usual local suppliers; the day will start at 11.00am with coffee followed by a personal demonstration by Matt. He will take you through the preparation of the three course meal, with plenty of opportunities to taste and ask questions.
